about
Conceived by Alec Finlay as a companion piece to the book minnmouth, tidesongs is an expression of tidal language and energy. Composed by Hanna Tuulikki from elements of sea-related words and coastal-place names sourced by Finlay, the composition features multi-layered voice and vocal processing, exploring the tidal languages of the East Coast, from Shetland to Suffolk. The piece takes the listener on a journey from mouth to sea and back again.
tidesongs was part of Finlay’s response to two commissions relating to marine renewables and tidal language, from Film and Video Umbrella and North Light, in 2017. These are part of an ongoing series of collaborative artist projects, artist blogs, and publications conceived by Finlay, which explore renewable energy. They include the books Ebban an Flowan, with Alistair Peebles and Laura Watts, and the forthcoming Broken Flowers (Acair), with contributions from Fraser Macdonald, Heather Deedman, and Kate McAllan.
